Developmental psychology items appear across the entire RPm board, not just in one section, because every clinical, assessment, and industrial scenario involves a person at some point in the lifespan. Examiners love this area because it rewards precision: mixing up Freud's oral stage with Erikson's trust-versus-mistrust stage, or a cross-sectional study with a longitudinal one, is an easy way to lose points on an otherwise familiar question. This lesson covers what the field studies, the debates that organize every theory, the timing concepts behind formative experiences, a side-by-side of the grand theories, and the research designs used to study change over time.
The scope of developmental psychology
Developmental psychology is the scientific study of how people change and stay the same across the lifespan, from conception to death. It covers three broad domains the board tests separately and together: physical development (body, brain, motor skills), cognitive development (thinking, language, memory, problem-solving), and socioemotional development (relationships, emotion, personality, self). A single item can target any domain at any age, so examinees must know milestones and theories across infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age, not just childhood. The field is also life-span in orientation, following Paul Baltes' view that development is multidirectional (gains and losses can occur together), multicontextual, and never finished at adulthood.
The three great debates
Nearly every developmental theory takes an implicit position on three long-standing debates, and the board frequently asks examinees to place a theorist or a finding correctly.
- Nature versus nurture: how much of development is driven by heredity and biological maturation (nature) versus environment, experience, and learning (nurture)? Modern science treats this as an interaction, most visibly in epigenetics, where environmental input turns genes on or off without changing the DNA sequence.
- Continuity versus discontinuity: does development unfold as a gradual, cumulative process (continuity), like adding bricks to a wall, or as qualitatively distinct stages (discontinuity), like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly? Stage theorists (Freud, Erikson, Piaget) favor discontinuity; learning theorists treat development as continuous.
- Stability versus change: do early traits and experiences persist into later life (stability), or can people change substantially over time (change)? This underlies questions about attachment persistence, temperament, and whether early trauma inevitably predicts adult outcomes.
Critical and sensitive periods
Timing matters because the same input does not produce the same effect at every age. A critical period is a fixed, narrow window during which a specific experience must occur for normal development; outside it, the effect cannot occur at all or is severely impaired. The classic example is prenatal organ formation: a teratogen like rubella causes different defects depending on which critical period of fetal development it strikes. A sensitive period, by contrast, is a broader window during which a person is maximally responsive to an experience, but the same development can still occur, less easily, outside it. Language acquisition is the textbook sensitive period: children acquire native-like grammar far more easily before puberty, but adults can still learn a second language with more effort. The board often tests this pair by scenario: if the outcome is impossible outside the window, it is critical; if merely harder, it is sensitive.
Comparing the grand theories
Six theoretical traditions dominate lifespan development, and the board consistently probes what each theory emphasizes as the engine of change.

Freud's psychosexual theory holds that personality forms as libido shifts across erogenous zones; too little or too much gratification at a stage produces a fixation shaping adult personality (an orally fixated adult who overeats or smokes). Erikson's psychosocial theory reframes development as eight lifespan crises, each posing a tension (trust vs. mistrust in infancy, identity vs. role confusion in adolescence, generativity vs. stagnation in middle adulthood), with successful resolution yielding a lasting virtue. The board frequently pairs a Freudian stage with its Eriksonian counterpart by age range.
Piaget's cognitive theory holds that children actively build schemas and update them through assimilation (fitting new information into an existing schema) and accommodation (changing the schema itself); the four stages move from sensorimotor object permanence, through preoperational egocentrism, to concrete operational conservation, and finally formal operational abstract reasoning. Learning theories reject stages altogether: classical conditioning (Pavlov) explains learned emotional associations, operant conditioning (Skinner) explains reinforced and punished behavior, and Bandura's social learning theory adds observational learning and self-efficacy, shown in the Bobo doll studies.
Ethological theory, rooted in Lorenz's work on imprinting in goslings, treats behaviors as evolved and biologically prepared to appear in specific windows. Bowlby's attachment theory extends this to humans: infants are predisposed to bond with a consistent caregiver during a sensitive period, and this bond becomes a secure base for exploration; Ainsworth's Strange Situation later operationalized attachment styles (secure, avoidant, resistant, and Main and Solomon's disorganized) on this foundation. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory shifts focus outward to context, nesting the child inside a microsystem (immediate settings like family and school), mesosystem (links between microsystems), exosystem (settings the child does not directly enter, such as a parent's workplace), macrosystem (broader culture and law, relevant locally to the Early Years Act, RA 10410), and the chronosystem (change over historical time, such as a pandemic reshaping schooling).
Research designs for studying change
Because development unfolds over time, the board tests three designs and the specific trade-off each one makes.

A cross-sectional design compares different age groups at one testing session, efficient but vulnerable to cohort effects: differences between groups may reflect the era each grew up in (technology, historical events, nutrition) rather than true developmental change. A longitudinal design follows the same sample over years, directly tracking individual change, but it is expensive, slow, and threatened by attrition (nonrandom dropout that tends to bias the remaining sample toward the healthiest or most cooperative participants) and by practice effects. The sequential design solves both problems by following several cohorts of different ages longitudinally, letting researchers separate true age-related change from cohort effects; it is the strongest but most resource-intensive option.
Separate from timing is the correlational versus experimental distinction. A correlational study measures how two naturally occurring variables relate and can estimate direction and strength, but cannot establish causation because of the third-variable problem and reverse causality. An experimental study manipulates an independent variable, randomly assigns participants to conditions, and measures effects on a dependent variable, making it the only design that supports causal claims. Much developmental research is correlational or quasi-experimental by necessity, since age and many life experiences cannot be manipulated, which is why the board expects examinees to spot a causal claim that has outrun its design.
Board traps and takeaways
- Critical vs. sensitive period: critical means the effect is impossible outside the window; sensitive means it is merely harder. Language acquisition is sensitive, not critical.
- Freud vs. Erikson by age: pair each Freudian stage with its Eriksonian counterpart (oral stage aligns with trust vs. mistrust) rather than treating the theories as unrelated timelines.
- Assimilation vs. accommodation: assimilation fits new information into an existing schema; accommodation changes the schema itself. Calling a zebra a "horse" is assimilating; revising the category is accommodating.
- Cross-sectional confound: age-group differences in a cross-sectional study may be cohort effects, not true developmental change; only longitudinal or sequential designs rule this out.
- Attrition is not random: dropout in longitudinal studies tends to remove the least healthy or engaged participants, making the remaining sample look better-adjusted than it started.
- Correlation is never causation: a vignette calling two variables "linked" or "associated" describes a correlational finding; only random assignment justifies a causal claim.
