What to expect in the Civil Engineer Licensure Exam

Exam day, at a glance
- The format
- Problem-solving across three subject groups: Mathematics, Surveying and Transportation Engineering (35%); Hydraulics and Geotechnical Engineering (30%); and Structural Engineering and Construction (35%).
- How long it is
- The CELE runs to roughly 150 questions and the board sets aside about 10h for it. Our timed mocks are paced to the same seconds-per-item, so exam-day speed feels familiar.
- The subjects
- It is scored across 3 subjects: Mathematics, Surveying and Transportation Engineering (MSTE), Hydraulics and Geotechnical Engineering (HGE), Structural Engineering and Construction (SEC). Each subject grade counts toward your general average.
- What it takes to pass
- A general average of at least 70%, with no subject rating below 50%. You need a general weighted average of at least 70% with no subject grade below 50%. Engineering boards pass at 70%, lower than the 75% of most PRC boards.
- When it is given
- Held by the PRC (commonly twice a year, around April and November). Confirm exact dates at prc.gov.ph.
Common pitfalls, and how to avoid them
- Studying unevenly. One weak subject can pull down your average or drop you below the 50% floor, so give every subject real time, not just your favorites.
- Never practicing under time. Knowing the material and answering it at exam speed are different skills. Take at least one full timed mock before exam week.
- Cramming instead of spacing. Short, daily review beats a few marathon sessions. Work a lesson and its quiz, then move on and come back.
- Skipping the review of wrong answers. The explanation on a missed item is where the learning is. Read every "why", not just the score.
